Malibu surf house learn to surf Morocco Taghazout Bay

When is the Best Time to Surf in Morocco?

One of the most common questions we get at Malibu Surf House is: "When should I come?" And honestly, the answer depends on what kind of surfer you are. Morocco is one of the few destinations in the world where the ocean is never truly flat — but the waves change dramatically depending on the season.

Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect surf trip to Taghazout Bay.

Morocco's Surf Season at a Glance

Morocco benefits from Atlantic swells generated by storms in the North Atlantic, which means consistent waves from October through April. Summer brings smaller, cleaner conditions — ideal for beginners and those looking for a more relaxed time in the water.

In short:

  • October – April: prime surf season, powerful swells, ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers
  • May – September: smaller waves, warmer water, perfect for beginners and improvers

Month by Month Breakdown

October – November

The season kicks off as the first North Atlantic swells start rolling in. Crowds are lighter than in peak winter, the weather is warm and sunny, and the waves are building in size and consistency. This is one of the best times to visit — great conditions without the full winter rush.

Water temperature: around 20–22°C. Wetsuit: 2–3mm shorty.

December – February

This is peak surf season in Morocco. Powerful swells arrive regularly, the famous spots like Anchor Point and Killer Point come alive, and the surf community in Tamraght and Taghazout is buzzing. Expect solid waves, cooler evenings, and a real energy in the villages.

This is the time for experienced surfers. Beginners can still surf, but conditions at the main spots can be challenging — your coach will guide you to the right beach.

Water temperature: around 17–19°C. Wetsuit: 3–4mm fullsuit.

March – April

As winter transitions to spring, the swells mellow slightly but remain consistent. The days get longer, the sun gets warmer, and the vibe becomes even more relaxed. March and April are a sweet spot — still great waves, less crowded than December and January, and beautiful warm weather.

Water temperature: around 18–20°C. Wetsuit: 2–3mm.

May – June

The big winter swells are gone, but the ocean is far from flat. Smaller, cleaner waves make this a fantastic time for beginners and intermediate surfers to progress. The weather is warm, the days are long, and the coast feels peaceful.

Water temperature: around 20–22°C. Wetsuit: optional shorty.

July – September

Summer in Morocco is warm and dry, with temperatures reaching 28–32°C. The swell is at its smallest, but there are still fun waves on good days — particularly for beginners. The sea is warm, the sunsets are spectacular, and the pace of life slows down beautifully.

If you're looking for a surf and relax holiday rather than a full-on surf trip, summer is a great choice.

Water temperature: up to 24°C. No wetsuit needed.

Best Time for Beginners

April through September is the sweet spot for beginners. Smaller, more manageable waves make learning easier and more enjoyable, and the warmer water means you can spend more time in the ocean without feeling cold.

At Malibu Surf House, our surf coaching sessions during these months are some of our favourites — there's nothing better than watching someone catch their first wave under the Moroccan sun.

Best Time for Advanced Surfers

November through March is your window. This is when Anchor Point, Killer Point, and Mysteries fire consistently, offering long, powerful rides that will push your surfing to the next level.

Come prepared with a good wetsuit, respect the lineup, and get ready for some of the best waves of your life.

What About Crowds?

December and January are the busiest months, particularly around Christmas and New Year. If you want great waves with fewer people in the water, October, November, March, and April are the sweet spots.

Summer is the quietest time — the surf community is smaller, the villages feel more local, and you'll often have waves almost to yourself.

Our Honest Recommendation

There is no bad time to visit Taghazout Bay. Every season has its own magic — from the raw energy of a January swell to the lazy, golden afternoons of a July surf session.

The best time to come is simply whenever you can. And when you do, the team at Malibu Surf House will make sure you're in the right spot, at the right time, for the right waves.
