Tamraght or Taghazout: Which Village Should You Choose?

If you're planning a surf trip to Morocco, chances are you've come across both Tamraght and Taghazout. These two villages sit just a few kilometres apart on the Atlantic coast north of Agadir, and together they form the heart of Morocco's surf scene. But which one should you base yourself in?

The honest answer is: they're different, and the right choice depends on what you're looking for. Here's our honest comparison.

A Tale of Two Villages

Taghazout is the one you've probably seen on Instagram. Painted in white and blue, perched on a rocky headland above the ocean, it's undeniably photogenic. Over the past decade it has transformed into a well-known surf destination, with surf schools, cafés, yoga studios, and guesthouses lining its narrow streets.

Tamraght sits just 3 kilometers to the south. Quieter, more residential, and less visited by tourists, it retains a strong sense of authentic Moroccan village life. The streets are a little wider, the pace a little slower, and the community feel a little warmer.

Both villages have direct access to world-class surf. Both are close to the main spots. But the experience of staying in each is quite different.

The Surf

From a pure surf perspective, both villages are equally well located.

Taghazout is home to Hash Point, a mellow right-hander that breaks right at the edge of the village — you can literally walk out of your door and paddle out. It's one of the most convenient spots in the area for a quick session.

Tamraght sits just above Banana Point, one of the most popular and consistent waves in Taghazout Bay. It's a short walk down to the beach, and the wave works well across a wide range of swell sizes — great for beginners and intermediates alike.

Both villages are a short drive from Anchor Point, Killer Point, and the other major spots in the bay.

The Vibe

This is where the two villages diverge most clearly.

Taghazout has embraced tourism. You'll find plenty of surf shops, international cafés, rooftop restaurants, and a constant flow of travellers from across Europe. The energy is lively, social, and cosmopolitan — great if you want to meet other surfers and be in the middle of the action.

Tamraght feels more like a real Moroccan village. Local families, kids playing football in the streets, the call to prayer echoing across the rooftops. There are fewer tourist-facing businesses, but the ones that exist tend to be more intimate and personal. If you want to feel like you're actually living in Morocco rather than passing through it, Tamraght is your place.

Accommodation

Taghazout has a wider range of accommodation options — from budget hostels to boutique riads. The concentration of tourists means more choice, but also higher prices and a less personal experience.

In Tamraght, accommodation options are fewer but often more special. Small guesthouses and surf houses like Malibu Surf House offer a home-away-from-home atmosphere that's hard to find in busier destinations. You're staying with people who know the village, know the surf, and genuinely care about your experience.

Food and Nightlife

Neither village is known for nightlife — Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country and the evenings tend to be calm and quiet, which is part of the charm.

For food, both villages have great options. Taghazout has more restaurants and cafés to choose from, including several with stunning ocean views. Tamraght has fewer options but some real hidden gems — local spots where you'll eat incredibly well for very little.

Agadir is just 20 minutes away by taxi if you ever want a bigger night out or a supermarket run.

Which One is Right for You?

Choose Taghazout if:

  • You want to be in the middle of the surf scene
  • You're travelling solo and want to meet other surfers easily
  • You prefer more restaurant and café options on your doorstep

Choose Tamraght if:

  • You want an authentic Moroccan village experience
  • You're travelling as a couple, with friends, or with family
  • You value a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere over a buzzing social scene
  • You want to feel at home rather than on a tourist trail

Our Take

We're obviously biased — Malibu Surf House is based in Tamraght, and we love it here. But we genuinely believe that for most travellers, Tamraght offers something that's increasingly rare in popular surf destinations: a place that feels real.

The surf is just as good. The sunsets are just as beautiful. And at the end of a long day in the water, coming back to a quiet village where everyone knows your name is, in our opinion, the best way to end a surf day in Morocco.
