The Ultimate Guide to Surf Spots in Taghazout Bay, Morocco

If you've been dreaming of warm water, consistent waves, and a laid-back village atmosphere, Taghazout Bay in Morocco should be at the top of your list. Stretching along the Atlantic coast just north of Agadir, this stretch of coastline has quietly become one of the world's most sought-after surf destinations — and for good reason. Whether you're a complete beginner paddling out for the first time or an experienced surfer chasing long, peeling rights, Taghazout Bay has a wave for you. Here's your complete guide to the best surf spots in the area.

Why Taghazout Bay?

Morocco's surf season is one of the longest in the world. Swells roll in consistently from October through April, with summer offering smaller, cleaner waves perfect for beginners. The water temperature stays comfortable year-round — around 18°C in winter and up to 24°C in summer — meaning you won't need a thick wetsuit. Add to that the incredible scenery, the affordable cost of living, the fresh tagines, and the warm hospitality of the local villages, and you start to understand why so many surfers keep coming back.

The Main Surf Spots

Anchor Point

Anchor Point is the jewel of Taghazout Bay and one of the most famous right-hand point breaks in the world. On a good swell, this wave can peel for over 300 metres, offering long, powerful rides that attract experienced surfers from across the globe. This is not a beginner wave. The take-off is critical, the current can be strong, and the lineup gets competitive during peak season. But if you have the level, there are few waves on the planet as rewarding. Best conditions: October to March, north to northwest swell, 2m+.

Banana Point

Just a short walk from the village of Tamraght, Banana Point is a more forgiving right-hander that works well across a range of swell sizes. It's a great spot for intermediate surfers looking to progress, offering long rides with a gentler take-off than Anchor Point. The vibe here is relaxed — locals, travellers, and surf coaches sharing the lineup with a smile. On smaller days, you'll often find beginner lessons taking place on the inside, making it one of the most sociable spots in the area. Best conditions: October to April, northwest swell, 1–2m.

Hash Point

Sitting right at the edge of Taghazout village, Hash Point is one of the most accessible spots in the bay. It's a mellow right-hander that works well for beginners and intermediate surfers, particularly on smaller swells when other spots are too big. The shallow reef at low tide demands some attention, but at mid to high tide, Hash Point is a forgiving and fun wave with a great view of the village. It's also a brilliant spot to watch the more experienced surfers take on the sections further out. Best conditions: Year-round, best at mid to high tide, 0.5–1.5m swell.

Killer Point

If you're an advanced surfer and the swell is pumping, Killer Point delivers some of the longest, most powerful rides in Morocco. Located between Taghazout and Anchor Point, this spot requires a solid swell to turn on — but when it does, it's spectacular. The name says it all: this wave is not for the faint-hearted. Strong current, powerful sections, and a demanding take-off make it strictly for experienced surfers only. Best conditions: November to February, large northwest swell, 2.5m+.

Mysteries

A hidden gem sitting between Anchor Point and Killer Point, Mysteries is a long, winding right-hander that rewards patience. It takes a bigger swell to wake up, but when it does, it offers some of the most fun, less-crowded waves in the area. It's a favourite among intermediate and advanced surfers who want a break from the busier spots, and the walk along the cliff to get there is worth it for the views alone. Best conditions: November to March, northwest swell, 1.5m+.

Best Spots for Beginners

If you're just starting out, Banana Point and Hash Point are your best bets. Both offer mellow waves, sandy or reef bottoms at safe tide levels, and easy paddling conditions on smaller days. Most surf schools and coaches in the area — including the ones we work with at Malibu Surf House — run their sessions at these spots, so you'll always have guidance close by.

A Few Tips Before You Paddle Out

Respect the locals. The surf community around Tamraght and Taghazout is tight-knit and welcoming, but like anywhere in the world, respect in the lineup goes a long way. Check the tides. Many spots here are reef breaks that change significantly with the tide. Always check before you go. Don't underestimate the sun. Even in winter, the Moroccan sun is strong. Reef-safe sunscreen is a must. Go with a local. If you're unfamiliar with the spots, a session with a local coach is the best investment you can make — not just for safety, but to get the most out of every wave.
